The Society of Orthopaedic Medicine was formed in 1979 to promote the theory and practice of orthopaedic medicine for the benefit of the public. The SOM is a registered charity and also a company limited by guarantee. It is a membership organisation comprising of approximately 1,300 physiotherapists and doctors working within the field. The main activity of the SOM is to provide orthopaedic medicine training through a programme of approximately 30 training courses per annum, plus an MSc in Orthopaedic Medicine. All the courses teach a logical method of diagnosis and treatment which transform the participant’s practices. The successful completion of the SOM Diploma course, plus both the practical and written membership exams, gives eligibility for candidates to become full members of the Society of Orthopaedic Medicine.
